Ring Of Elysium is a battle royale type of action game wherein you play a fighter dropped into an ever-shrinking combat zone. The game lets you scavenge weapons and armor in a battle to the death with other players. It’s developed by Tencent Games, who also made PUBG for mobile.
Despite the similarity, this game offers some new concepts for battle royale fans. One of the most significant difference are the three classes the players can choose from: a glider, a grapple gun, and a mountain bike. All these offer players a unique way of approaching traversal and enemy engagement.
Stalk and shoot
While the basic setup of Ring of Elysium is similar to PUBG, Ring of Elysium adds a number of improvements that make playing simpler. Looting is smoother and easier thanks to an improved interface, for instance. This game also features a snowy, mountainous map that provides unique threats and tactical challenges. As in most other battle royale games, players can compete solo or as part of a duo or squad, choosing between first-person or third-person perspectives.
As soon as you’ve chosen the class you want, you can then pick your starting point on the map. You can immediately start exploring the buildings in the area as you look for guns that will compliment your starting weapon. The game offers quite a lot of loot. However, one downside is it won’t take long for you to find an arsenal of powerful weapons, items, and armor. This takes players near full strength too early in the game.
Moreover, there is the occasional lack of visibility because of the atmospheric effects of the game, like storms, ashy clouds, leaves blowing in the wind, and more. However, this can also be treated as an additional challenge the players can enjoy. When it is not that easy to see your opponents, you get to rely more on other skills or strategies to win the game.
Polished and fun
The game offers a surreal environment, with well-thought-out maps, animations that look so natural, and sun-kissed beaches, all paired with high-quality audio effects. Those two together, Ring Of Elysium looks very polished and packs a lot of features. While there is some stuff that you can purchase in-game, you can still have fun without touching your wallet, since they’re not really essential for progressing in the game.
On top of that, the game provides a great shooting experience because of its solid gunplay and realistic physics. It has all the necessary effects and features to make it an easily recommendable game. However, it doesn’t have enough to elevate it to the more popular games in the genre, like Blackout and Fortnite. Mostly because the genre is already dominated by well-loved titles that it doesn’t really look that special.
Potentially great
Ring of Elysium may have started as a copy of the industry leader, but it offers exciting gameplay and some new challenges for battle royale fans. With its smooth looting, improved interface, and overall visual and audio effects, the game doesn’t disappoint in providing a great shooting experience for its players. However, with a game genre that is already heavily dominated by popular titles, this one isn’t really that memorable.
